Nick Berg Video

14 May 2004

NOTE: This is a duplicate of a duplicate of my earlier post. I don’t know if I’m under attack or just getting swamped. Earlier I believe that I had been targeted, but now I think I’m just getting overloaded. In an effort to keep MO online, I’ve had to change this post link AGAIN in an effort to cut down on mindless traffic. This is probably the only time you’ll ever hear me talk about needing to limit traffic. Weird. This video thing is just insane.

Available for a limited time on MO here. (6.3 MB .wmv)

SORRY. HAD TO PULL IT DUE TO BANDWITH ISSUES

If this totally kills my bandwidth, I’ll have to pull it. But it seems that many others have maxed theirs and this should be seen by those who want to see it. Since you won’t see it on the news, here it is.

WARNING - This video shows a human being having his head cut from his body and is therefore extremely graphic and disturbing. Use common sense if it’s available to you.

A couple of quick observations:

Berg doesn’t seem to have any clue about what’s coming. It appears possible that this was a staged taping with a surprise ending. Also, we hear about simulated executions of hostages, and this could be the nth time Berg sat through this.

There appears to be a lot of editing and/or skipping around in the video, though it’s hard to tell at this quality level.

Despite all the talk of connections between Berg and shady characters, there’s no doubt what message the bad guys were trying to get across. No matter what Berg’s actual status was, the masked men wanted to scare us.

My initial reaction to the allegations of connections between Berg and al Qaeda figures made me think back to the rush of “mercenary” talk after the killings of those contractors in Fallujah. The talk may very well be accurate, but it seems to be presented in such a way as to try and defuse the story, just like we saw after the Fallujah attacks on the Blackwater contractors. Now we’re hearing about Nicholas Berg’s “dangerous taste for risk” and I’m wondering if we’re seeing an attempt to pass this off as just desserts rather than the horrendous crime that it is.

Regardless, something fishy is going on here. I doubt we’ll ever know. Unless, of course, it makes Bush look bad. Then we’ll hear every sordid detail.

UPDATE: I originally meant to post this last night, but I lost my post when our air conditioner tripped a breaker. I wanted to look up the spelling of “Abu Musab al-Zarqawi” and was more than a little shocked that no mention of the Nicholas Berg story was present on the front page of MSNBC.com. Here’s a screenshot taken at the time.

UPDATE 2: I’m getting CRUSHED by traffic. Well, relatively speaking, anyway. I have moved the video itself to my backup facilities, hoping to head off enormous bandwidth charges. The link now pulls the video from a different host, but it’s the same thing and seems to work fine. Let me know if you have problems.

I’ve also changed the filename of the video on my primary server, so if you’ve direct linked to it, it won’t work any more. Also, creeps who want to supress the video can’t just set automated jobs (so easily, anyway) to overload my site. Bastards. I’m going to keep doing this periodically, so please just link to this post. The links here on this page will always work.

UPDATE 3: If you have trouble here or I have to pull the video due to bandwidth issues, check out Wizbang’s list of hosts. Plus, Wizbang notes that a reporter spoke with Berg two days before he was kidnapped.

UPDATE 4: Backcountry Conservative also has links.

UPDATE 5: Readers can’t play nice, so comments are closed.

UPDATE 7: Sorry. I’ve had to pull the video due to bandwidth overages. Thanks to all who have visited.

It is my personal opinion that we should pull all of our troops out of Iraq and let that country kill itself. They have been fighting for thousands of years–it has become the nature of the people. The idea that Iraq can become a democracy is ridiculous. I support Bush but this has gotten completely out of control. Let’s leave now before we’re all dead. Posted by gina at May 15, 2004 01:20 AM

First and foremost, my deepest sympathy goes out to the Berg Family. Seeing this brings up a lot of questions. Why is this not happening to the British soldiers that are also there? What are we doing different? Were other countries (ie. France) being informed of all that was going on and we were being fed lies? Why are we even there, now, no weapons have been found? I spent 8 years in the US Army in a FSB and drove a Medical Tracked Tank and I am glad that before all of this happened, my time was up!! It is like Vietnam all over again, why are we there and our soldiers there. The French are smart. When they had their soldiers massacred in Vietnam they got out, and we like idiots believed what our government told us and went over there (again for what) and got out CHILDREN killed. The French were not going to let that happen again, I suppose. But yet, we go back in. All of this happened after 9/11, we caught Saddam, but what now, we hear nothing about him anymore or of the search of Bin Laden. What are we there for? All I have to say is, Bring our sons, daughters, wifes, husbands and friends home, ALIVE. Enough is Enough George Bush, just leave. Posted by Peggy at May 15, 2004 10:13 AM

I can’t believe you people, you think all of your talk about running is going to help our troops? What we need to do is grit our teeth and defeat these animals now or our children and theirs will never be safe . You pull out now and the terrorists will only get more emboldened. The only reason this would be like Vietnam is because of the lack of support at home from those who take living here for granted, and don’t have a speck of common sense, If we had quitters like during WW2 we would all Nazi or Tojo slaves. Wake up and learn something on your own instead of being a brainwashed pacifist. Posted by Keenan Fletcher at May 15, 2004 12:08 PM

im an arab-egyptian. you have to know that we’re sympathysing with the Berg’s family, i know how terrible this action was. however, before you american people start claiming that Arabs or Muslims are barbarians and bloody, you should see what you did to us as well!! For us, the torturing or rape crimes that are taking place in Abu Gharib prison are more painful than beheading. Berg, may god rest his soul, felt pain only when the knife slit his throat, however, those people out there in abu gharib are beeing killed a 10000 times a day. american soldiers do not take our souls, but our bodies and dignity. you have to feel the pain we’re going through everyday when we see our brothers and sisters in iraq and palestine beeing raped, electrified, dragged from their ‘organs’, and slaughtered as well!! you are giving yourselves the right to KILL, and taking away our right to DEFEND. what do you expect us to do after all the humiliation we’re going through? what do you expect of a man who had his wife raped, his child beheaded, and his parents burnt alive? you expect him to ask for mercy? well, i personally believe this is what creates suicide bombing, for he no more has anything to live for. and i assure you that there’s no family in palestine had less than 1 or 2 of its members killed.. and iraq is to become like palestine if she remained silent. by the way, your media shows you what it WANTS you to see. we have lists of millions of names of children, women, elders.. killed, cut into pieaced, burnt, beheaded in front of their families…. what we’re missing is a video tape to record the barbarian actions you committ, but your eyes do not see. all im asking you is to put yourselves in our shoes. imagine your daughter raped by 5 men 5 times a day. imagine your child in your arms, and bullets are fired around you, and you failed to prevent these 100 bullets from penetrating every inch of your 10-year-old child. imagine yourself beeing kicked out of your house for no reason. oh, there’s just too much happening over here that your minds CANNOT imagine. my consolation goes to the Berg’s family, and to all the Arabs. Well, maybe I’ve heard something sillier, but I can’t think of what it might have been. It would have had to be pretty damn silly. furthermore, your fabrications about raped by 5 men 5 times a day etc are pure nonsense. if we couldn’t cover up the forced wearing of women’s underwear, do you think we could cover up something like this? not bloody likely. if you want to have an effect on what’s going on in the world, you should join the call for the Iraqi people to give up the animals who tortured Nick Berg. you should denounce the entire kill-the-innocent approach taken by your religious brethren. Yasmine, I am a Muslim American and I condemn what those RUTHLESS MURDERERS did to Berg!!! Reading over all these comments, you wonder why one may think it’s the end of the world. Instead of going back and forth on who’s right and who did the right thing (you have to admit, there was NO RIGHT DONE ON EITHER SIDE), we need to pull together as humans and somehow find peace amongst each other. One comment to Chris: About torure and rape being silly compared to beheading, you obviously don’t know anyting about Islam!! For us, nudity, rape or sexual torture IS worse then dying so it may be silly to you but it’s not to us!! Thank you Posted by Roya at May 15, 2004 02:10 PM

  16. Yasmine Aboul Fotouh Says:

Chris, i’ve seen pictures of a lady raped by 5 men in abu gharib’s prison. Switch on your TV and you might see it… or, i forgot, your media shows you what it wants you to see! the most humiliating way you can torture somebody is to rape him… he is tortured whilst you are doing it, and will be tortured by the memory of it for the rest of his life. killing him just rests him in peace!!!! and for the guy who saw palestini shooting a child in his father’s arms: for God’s sake, palestini don’t even have guns!!! and if you want to make sure it was an arab guy that was shot, check out his name: Muhammad Al-Durra.. surf the internet you’ll find his name. I wish we were able to make a big fuss of each and everyone killed by your weapons so you can understand us. I wish you were in our place, maybe your minds can judge better. Our Qur’an says its a sin to kill non-soldiers, children, women, old people, and even trees! Our Qur’an tells us to fight only for the sake of our rights. Qur’an tells us never to start violence or war. And here i am saying that beheading Berg was not the right thing to do; but iraqi had so much anger inside them, Berg was what they were able to get. Berg was a victim, of YOUR violence. let me ask you a question: does your religion tell you to kill, burn, and rape? If yes, please let me know.. because that would explain a lot. First of all, US does not have the right to ‘grant’ Iraq freedom. It is the iraqi people’s, ONLY, concern. And, what mass destruction weapons have they found so far? Wasn’t this the US’s claim to invade Iraq? Even if they wanted to do the iraqis a favour by changing saddam’s regime, is this the freedom they promised them? Those ‘cowards’ as Vance said, what.. you expect them to reveal their faces? and, if you consider them cowards, then please check your soldiers who painted their faces while raping our women. Isn’t it the same concept? Arabs, specially iraqi, always condemned what saddam’s been doing. But, they never got the chance to say what they wanted to say; yes, you may say there is no democracy. However, what is the US’s problem? we can solve our problems on our own. Tell Bush to take your soldiers outta there. America started the violence, and we’re only defending ourselves. Leave our country if you are too sick of what we’re doing. Posted by at May 15, 2004 02:45 PM

  18. Karim El Mansi Says:

I wonder why cant Americans see where their foreign policy is taking them. you are talking about 9/11, did u ask ur self who did such horrible things? Al Qaeda ? who ‘CREATED’ al Qaeda in first place? in case u dont know, it is American government during the cold war, who funded the growth of this group. Furthermore, why cant u spearate between extremist fundamentalist groups and regular civilian muslims? dont u know that these groups are being in continuous battles with governments and scoietis in the arab world ? they cause choas in their own countries. The appearance of such extremist groups came from the deteriorated economic and overall law level of development in most of muslim countries .. thanks to Imperialist Colonial countires in the 19th and 20th centuries. and USA is continuing the same thing again in the 21st. U.S. could have done much better in Iraq and could have proved to the arabs and muslims aand the whole world that U.S is the democracy and freedom best advocate. U.S could have done so only if they understood the Arab and Muslim psychology. Muslims are so stubborn and ethnic nationalists, attacking their ethnicity and religious entities is, for them, the most provoking and irritating act. To clarify the picture, since the broadcasting of the Breg bloody beheading video tape, i havent met a single muslim or Arab who wasnt extremely shocked at such bloody action. The beheading is condemned by all officials and media. Why u still judge and make such a sweeping generalization against muslims? Using ur line of logic I’d say that all Americans are sexual perverts and Masonic after ive seen Abu gharib’ torture videos. And even if we assume that arabs and muslims ara bohemian ruthless animals as u claim, what du expect from ppl who didn’t attend schools and lived under war for all of their lives and had at least one relative, fiancT or a dear friend killed in a war, no educational system and no hope in life ? where du think they will learn the American freedom from? I am an American and I do not think we should be there. All of you are not getting the picture, WHY ARE WE THERE? We live in a country where the government regulates religion in our very schools yet we send out soldiers to another country to do what, try to regulate their religion too? No matter what the religion, Catholic, Jewish, Muslim, Islamic, it doesn’t matter. We should not mess with another countrys’ religion. This is why we are ALONE there. No other country has censorship in TV and radio like we do here, so they can feed us all the bulls*** they want. For example, we don’t hear anything about Bin Laden anymore, did Bush just forget about him or what about the weapons, nothing found yet. Being, this was why are troops are there in the first place. So again, I ask, WHY ARE WE there? And why is nothing like this happening to the British? I know who I am voting for in September, NOT BUSH!!! Posted by Peggy at May 15, 2004 03:36 PM

We are in Iraq for the carnivorous lifestyle you arabian people hold. Hussein paying money for terrorist activity! What the hell, who didnt know? You Iraqi’s actually didnt know you were the ones helping support the World Trade Center Towers Detruction of 3500+ people. If we were not in Iraq then who knows in a few years we will have a nuke in our backyard with your name on it. Iraq needs democracy their so everyone can live in peace and pleasure without worrying over who is gonna cut your head off or get raped or whatever. I would rather be raped than have my head cut off, it is rather a long torturous death. Do you think berg died instantly? No he did not. He lived long enough to see his body while his head was held up. That was a horrific crime for a civilian or anyone to endure. Punishable by a firing squad shooting off toes then fingers, ankles, knees, hips, ass, stomach, chest, then shooting these mother fuckers in the eyes and then if the mother fucking heads. Iraq’s are 99% dead and you better be thankful to your (q’uara) that I’m not the damn President of U.S. because you would endure 5 times the Japanese did during World War II. Iraq would no longer be a country as well as on the map. All you Iraq’s and Afghan’s would be fucking dead, men women and children because your just terrorist breeders and you all need to die. 21. James R. Rummel Says:

Got a couple of things to go over. The first is about a comment from Yasmine Aboul Fotouh (If that’s your real name, that is.). ‘Chris, I’ve seen pictires of a lady raped by 5 men in abu gharib’s prison.’ Thos pictures are from a pr0n site that specializes in rough sex. The people involved admit it, the British papaers that were snookered admit it, and the pr0n site is enjoying increased traffic because of the controversy. C’mon now, Aboul. You’re really not helping dispel the notion that Islamics are a bunch of primitives, here. ‘for God’s sake, palestini don’t even have guns!’ So what are they waving around in all of those pictures of Palestinian funerals, then? What are they using to shoot in the air? Italian bread? I think that’s enough of Aboul. If someone ignores reality then I really don’t care what their opinion is. Now let’s turn our attention to a comment made by Karim El Mansi. ‘Furthermore, why can’t u spearate between extremist fundamentalist groups and regular civilian Muslims?’ That’s an easy one. It’s because regular civilian Muslims don’t condemn the extremist groups. In fact, it pretty much looks like most of them actually support them, tacitly if not overtly. Then there’s the matter of your media. You don’t have a tradition of a free press, granted. But the amount of lies, fabrications and outright propoganda that the Islamic news outlets engages in is staggering. The fact that you guys are all too eager to actually believe tripe that anyone with half a brain could see is false also boggles our minds. We figure that anyone who’s willing to accept this crap as the truth must be in the terrorist’s camp already. ‘The beheading is condemned by all officials and media.’ No it’s not. In fact, the majority of the media and governments in the Islamic world are rather short of outrage about this. I’ve only heard of Syria, Jordan and Iraq officially condemning it. That’s enough if Karim, I think. Pretty much for the same reason that I don’t want to talk to Aboul, although Karim sounds better educated. Now let’s turn our attention to a comment made by Peggy. ‘….WHY ARE WE THERE?’ Easy enough. A series of terrorist attacks against Americans, each worse than the last, were all met with very weak responses by the previous administration. 9/11 proved that Islamic extremists won’t just leave us alone even though we don’t even notice them, so we had to find a way to prove that their way of looking at the world is not only worthless, it’s actually harmful. So how to do it? Nuke every Islamic city in the world? Kill tens of millions and cause untold suffering to innocent people? That would probably get the idea across, but we’re the Good Guys. So we decided to depose a brutal dictator who bragged about his ties to terrorism, and then build a society based on our values even though the citizens were Muslims. The prosperity and freedom that the citizens of Iraq are just beginning to enjoy might be enough to change the minds of the average citizen. If they manage to get a nuke and blow it up in one of our cities it’ll mean that we failed to make changes quick enough to prevent it. We’ll probably nuke them then. ‘We should not mess with another countries religion. That is why we are ALONE there.’ We’re not messing with their religion, just with their system of government. There’s no Arab democracies in the world. Zero! That’s what we’re trying to change. So far as being alone, there were 17 other countries that sent combat troops or support units that could have come under fire for our invasion of Iraq. Right now we have 30 other countries that have contributed combat forces who are in Iraq at this very minute. Your concept of ‘alone’ and my own are very different. ‘No other country has censorship on TV and radio like we do here….’ Consider that for a moment. If that was even slightly true, then the sitting President would never allow the media to mention his opponent in the next election. But you see newspaper articles about Kerry, TV spots paid for by his campaign, Internet sites that go on and on about him. Easily perceived reality prove you to be wrong, Peggy. That means that you’re consigned to the looney category along with Karim and Aboul. James Posted by James R. Rummel at May 15, 2004 05:23 PM

wake up every one Americans, Arabs, Jews, Christians, Muslims Budhists I really mena every one. Peopla are people, we all want to live in honour dignity and peace. We all want to eventually pair up with someone we love, have children and provide for them so that they grow up to be better than us as we move on leaving them behind with only memories of our total love for them. People are people. Yes there are good people and there are bad people but one thing is for sure people aren’t born to be bad. Bad experiences change good people to bad. The root conflict in the middle east is the Arab-Zionist conflict which must be resolved as soon as possible and we do need the USA in on this. There is no denying that there are good Muslims as well as bad Muslims just like there are good christians and bad ones there are also good jews and bad jews. The bad guys (always the loud minority) seem to use religion for their own selfish and vain gains. So the only thing we good guys (seemingly silent majority)have in common is our goodness and belief in the sanctity of humanity. So let us not just sit there arguing and blaming each other with vain ‘holier than though attitudes’ and accept one another in order to unite and take on the bad guys. Our biggest probelem at the moment isn’t taking on the bad guys it is understanding what has changed them from good to bad. The answer to that is Violence. Posted by Gaz at May 15, 2004 05:54 PM

I haven’t viewed the video yet because I don’t know exactly how I will react to the cold blooded murder of a human in that fashion… but I would comment on the post that I’ve read here today. It seems that everyone has the idea that this conflict/war/whatever is all about religion. Nothing could be further from the truth. Generally speaking, the American people nor the American government are trying to change Iraq or the Arab world into non-Muslim countries. The U.S. is in Afganistan in retalliation for their government’s support of a group who attacked our country. They are staying there so that another ‘crazed with power’ cleric does not take over and cause the same situation to evolve again. We invaded Iraq under the flag of disarmament and deposing Saddam Hussein. If the whole WMD thing was just a fictional excuse, don’t you think they would have taken it all the way and planted the evidence. Of course the have the resources to do such a thing. We have gotten rid of a danger to the whole world( Hussein). One that if left unchecked would have went past his borders again and again. Not to mention the fact that he had groomed his sons to follow him in case of his death… so we were looking at generations of the same dangerous regime. Deposing Hussein was the greatest thing to come from this war. I hate the fact that we have to stay there, but it is a neccesity. We must help re-establish government in Iraq to assure that the chances are small for another dictator like Saddam to come to power. The is no room for appeasement for wild dictators who rule with an iron fist and claim lands in the name of nationalism or religious war (like extermination of the ‘evil jews and christians’). Does this sound familiar. Think about 1938. What President Bush has done is brave. He ahs , without regard to getting re-elected chose to stay the course and be reponsible superpower nation. If you don’t think this is about religion…you are a mormon. That is like saying that Hitler didn’t kill the Jews…even though he stated exactly what he was going to do more than 10 years prior in his book Mein Kampf. SHITE MUSLIMS are vowed by their religion to KILL all infidels (you can ask any of their clerics…infidels are people who aren’t muslims); SHITES believe in the literal interpretaion of the KORAN…it states that all infidels must die…and that is their view. Approximately 20% of Muslims are SHITES. That would be about 200 million people who believe everyone else should die. Do a little research…all the 9/11 hijackers, Al Queda members…can you guess what sect they are from? Could you imagine…if some Americans commandered some commerical flights…and smashed them into the Rock of the Dome, Mecca, etc.? 31. Charles Vance Says:

I just want to say that the ‘abuse’ and ‘torture’ going on in Abu Gharib are nothing like the abuse and torture that Saddam and his sons and followers inflicted on the Iraqi people. For some reason I NEVER heard the Arabs condemning that! Not once. I have also never heard of Iraqi civilians or soldiers, being dragged to death behind trucks, being beheaded or burned to death, I haven’t seen footage or even heard rumors of cheering and celebrating at the killing of Iraqi soldiers by coalition forces. The democrats and the Arabs are using this ‘torture and abuse’ by Americans to further their propaganda campaign against the U.S. and against George Bush. As far as I am concerned, the greatest thing the U.S. ever did for human rights was to track down and capture Saddam Hussein like the cowardly dog that he is. I hope the U.S. doesn’t give in and quit before Bin Laden and all of his followers and supporters are captured as well. I hope to see both of them and all their cowardly kind executed, preferably the same way that Nick Berg was, and if the rest of the Arab and Muslim world doesn’t like it, then they are enemies of the United States too. I say that the total annihilation of Al Qaeda and any other terrorists that prey on civilians, and those who support them is more than justified. I pray for retribution for the death of Nick Berg and all the other innocent men, women and children killed by these terrorist COWARDS. They seem so proud of what they do, but they always cover their cowardly faces! Don’t EVER forget the deaths of 9-11! Posted by Charles Vance at May 15, 2004 02:21 PM

  32. Ed Says:

Al Qaeda - murder 3,500 + video beheading of Pearl and Berg + ‘Ala’ knows what else - all defenseless civilians! U.S. and coalition troops going through hell and dying FOR THEM in an effort for freedom to prevail where it had been snuffed out by megalomaniac. The ‘enemy’ is fighting against freedom in the name of native Iraqi (basically Arabic) righteous indignation on one hand because they’re too stupid to understand what we’re doing for them (just like U.S. anti-conservative liberals) and on the other hand as an effort to prevent themselves (radical power- hungry Muslim extreemists) from being reduced to an irrelevant anachranism (just like U.S. anti-conservative liberals also). Get a plan boys! The sooner they stop shooting at coalition forces, then the sooner it would be that they would get their crappy little country back at which time they could then exercize whatever tactics they want to energize whatever is left of their misguided political base. Get real - even in Heaven there’s only a finite number of virgins. But they fear that peace and freedom would mean the end of their power grabbing Islamic central agenda. They should take a lesson from U.S. liberals and become experts at political nuance and double-speak which really wows the vast majority of the left side of the bell distribution I.Q. curve in the USA, what we on the right side refer to as ‘appealing to the lowest common denominator.’ From what we’ve seen lately, they wouldn’t have too hard a time succeeding in Iraq considering where on the curve most of those people apparently reside. Wake up and smell the camel dung, Iraq. It’s the modern way. Posted by Ed at May 15, 2004 02:42 PM
