What does Murdoc do when he’s short of time? He posts pics! (He also posts pics when he’s not short of time. Murdoc likes pics.) Here’s more gratuitous tank action:
U.S. Army M1 Abrams tanks maneuver in the streets as they conduct a combat patrol in the city of Tall Afar, Iraq, on Feb. 3, 2005. The tanks and their crews are attached to the 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment. DoD photo By Staff Sgt. Aaron Allmon, U.S. Air Force. (Released)
Pic from JCCC, which has a great wallpaper for NORAD’s main screen. (You know, the one we saw in the movie “Wargames”). What I’m getting at is that it’s big.
Notice the ballistic glass gun shield on the loader’s MG. The imagery from the TUSK upgrades for the M1 showed a solid metal shield, though it seems that this solution would be far preferable (as long as the protection is sufficient) to a solid one that blocks a lot of the visibility. So is this part of the TUSK program or something different? Murdoc wants to know.

It would be nice if the commander had a shield like that too, but it seems it would get in the way of reloading.
I’ll bet this photo (with correctly termed unit ID) is from the same batch as the one you posted earlier. Silly PAO twinks. Also, note that this is an M1A2-the CITV is clearly visible in front of the loader’s MG. Not all units have those.
How do you find these pics on the JCCC, I cant get the norad one (or do any search for that matter).
Good to see this muzzle is clear and ready for action!
Dang it, Dar! I meant to mention that after all the brouhaha over the previous tank pic. Because I’m a bit sarcastic at times. Really. But I forgot. Once again, MO readers save the day!
How do you get to the norad pic?
Here’s some pics before TUSK (about a year ago I guess), during a study for urban upgrades to the M1. The same glass shield was proposed back then. Some stuff made their way through to TUSK, others didn’t. http://img31.imageshack.us/img31/6540/M240.jpg http://img84.imageshack.us/img84/7121/M1.jpg http://img90.imageshack.us/img90/2469/M2HB.jpg http://img74.imageshack.us/img74/6168/Slat.jpg
Looks like they have sprayed out an offensive name for their tank. From both the two frontal areas next to the barrel and the gun barrel… I wonder what it was.
