Brits Retire Last Harriers

Via Lex come this: UK’s Axed Harrier jets take final flight

Britain’s Harrier jets took their final flight Wednesday before the 16-strong fleet is axed as part of spending cuts intended to help reduce a record budget deficit.

The decision to scrap the iconic military planes, and to send the Ark Royal carrier that hosts them into early retirement, means the Royal Navy will be left without the ability to launch aircraft at sea for a decade.

Video of the final flight’s events here.

Here are a couple pics:

  1. You have pictures of the Sea Harrier, but that plane was retired by the RN in 2006. Today’s retirement was of the Harrier II, but sad nonetheless.

    1. Yes, I was looking for old pics of RN Harriers in general. Was hoping for some from the Falklands war but didn’t find any good ones.

I think it’s a shame to retire these things after all the money spent upgrading them so recently to GR9.

  2. Have to start the raffle on likelihood that the Brits ever fly a fixed wing off a ship again. That future is dependent on a failing future aircraft carrier program funded by a fading government trying to preserve a long dead empire and a failing Joint Strike Fighter program being funded by the world’s largest debtor nation. Britannia no longer rules the waves. The Royal Navy of yore is little more than a glorified coast guard.

    Another victim of socialism.

    1. We are not hanging onto a long lost empire, that has long gone and good ridance, what we have left are british overseas territories who chose to be British even though they have been offered independance and as a consequence we are responsible for their defence,The Brits contribute to world troubles with pride and we should beand are proud of them,As for coast guard comment, our navy is still the 4th largest in the world and packs a punch, yes we have no operational carriers until the Queen Elizebeth comes along, which i may add is a supercarrier almost equal to the american Eizenhower.

  3. I wonder when the Argies will start talking about the Malvinas again. Not like the UK could do squat about it now anyway.

  4. Since they realize they can’t defend them, the Brits are talking about “leasing” the Falkland Islands back to the Argentineans.

Only the Brits could come up with that idea, although I did hear rumors that Obama was thinking about “leasing” Alaska back to the Ruskies with Sarah Palin thrown in for free.

  5. Look on the internet and get facts correct, you will see that the USA is in fact the world largest Debter nation, in fact China owns most of their debt and believe it or not Britain is second, The USA actually owe Britain Billions as do rest of world hence why the debt issue is not such a big issue and we still retain our AAA credit rating.

  6. It seems most Americans cannot and will not get facts before putting pen to paper,I had same problems when stationed with American soldiers in that they have a habit of opening their mouths without thinking then crap ushers out,America is a great country however they need not call the rest of the world to achieve this especially the ones who help in times of need
