We were all fooled by the “floating hotel” cover story, weren’t we?

China aircraft carrier confirmed by general

The head of China’s General Staff of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) has confirmed that China’s first aircraft carrier is under construction.

Gen Chen Bingde refused to say when the carrier – a remodelled Soviet-era vessel, the Varyag – would be ready.

It was sold by the Ukraine to China on the condition that it never be used as a warship.

  1. Maybe the aircraft are going to carry marshmallows and rainbows, not bombs.

It’s that authoritarian efficiency that Tom Friedman so admires. Sure we said one thing, but now we are doing another, and no one can do anything about it.

  2. Yes, ER………..but few realise those fighters for the icing are actually going to be used to drop “sprinkles” on the frosting of the cupcakes the PLAN will be distributing to other countries in the area; as part of it’s “Harmonious State of Inter Country Relationships” program.

Except Japan…………which will receive larger “iron” sprinkles, and NO harmoniousness.

  3. So…that means that the Ukrainians can repossess it due to breach of contract, right? If only the world worked that way.

  4. I’ve been following the Varyag story from the very start, and I can’t help but wonder; was ANYONE ever fooled by Beijing’s cover story?

First, they go all the way to Ukraine to buy an Aircraft Carrier, claiming that it was for a “floating casino” — because we ALL know how roomy and luxurious Russian warships are.

Then they pulled it into a dry dock and started repairing it — still, the casino story.

Then, they painted it in PLAN Gray, and still said it was going to be a casino.

Then, they began fitting it with weapons and propulsion, and re-named it “Shi Lang” after a general whose claim to fame was conquering Taiwan — all the undertrappings of a successful casino!

Then, they bought a bunch of Su-33 Sea Flankers from Russia. Yep, still *totally* going to be a casino.

Then, they REVERSE-ENGINEERED the Su-33, an aircraft whose only purpose in like is to fly off the class of Aircraft Carrier the Shi Lang belongs to. I’m sure do that all the time in ‘Vegas.

And now — *gasp!* — the Shi Lang really WILL be put into plan service as a carrier!

Who would have EVER seen it coming?
