Great. The Iranians have pictures of an aircraft carrier.

US aircraft carrier filmed by Iran in Strait of Hormuz standoff

They’re all giddy about this, apparently:

An Iranian surveillance plane has recorded video and photographed a US aircraft carrier during Iran’s ongoing navy drill near a strategic waterway in the Persian Gulf, the official IRNA news agency reported.

The commander of Iran’s navy said the reconnaissance mission was proof that his fleet had “control over the moves by foreign forces” but it was unclear what intelligence could be derived from the grainy video, which was played triumphantly on state television.

“Control over the moves by foreign forces” by taping some video? They apparently define “control” differently than we do.

Here is the video. Decide if they’ve got control over the movement of the USS John Stennis:

I didn’t translate the news report, but it probably said the ship was fleeing for its life.

  1. I suppose we could release the Snoopy-team footage in retaliation. Pure BS propaganda. Happens all the time.

How is it that Iran’s 1-2x a year naval exercises get front page and the US 3+ per year per coast maybe gets mention in the local papers in Norfolk, Jax, or San Diego?

    This is normal training…

    1. No kidding. I find it very unlikely the recon plane actually sneaked in and got the footage without the Navy knowing. Good chance there was an F-18 off their wing while they took it.

The fact that we have restraint doesn’t mean they know what they are doing.

      1. I wonder if next time we’ll make an effort to keep a plane visible between the observers and the ship so that their footage will show our plane. Or maybe we did and they just showed the bits without it.

Not really worth the effort, IMHO. Anyone impressed by this is not someone we should be overly concerned with.

  2. A lot of people don’t know this, but if you maintain visual contact with an aircraft carrier, you can steer it with your mind. It’s a pretty serious flaw in aircraft carrier design. I’m constantly amazed they haven’t fixed that bug yet.

  3. “A lot of people don’t know this, but if you maintain visual contact with an aircraft carrier, you can steer it with your mind.”

Not if the Captain is wearing an Aluminium skull cap, Kevin!
