A little help here, please

A friend gave me an extra 2004 “Air Superiority” calendar with pictures of various military aircraft. The F-111 (still flying with the Royal Australian Air Force) is featured for March.

What’s that big jet of flame? I don’t have the foggiest. Click the pic for a bigger view.

  1. What they said. The F-111 has a pilot-controlable fuel dump at the tail. When active, fuel is dumped behind the aircraft. If fuel is being dumped and the pilot engages the afterburner, the extended exhaust cone will reach out to the fuel stream and produce the very exciting display. http://www.f-111.net/kidz.htm
