The 1,000 ton catamaran is 262 feet long, 72 feet wide and can operate in as little as 12 feet of water. The ship is meant to test concepts and technologies planned for use in the larger Littoral Combat Ship. But “Sea Fighter” might prove useful enough to be the model for a new class of coastal combat ships. For that reason, the U.S. Coast Guard is participating in the test effort, and may use a version of Sea Fighter for their regular operations.
I can imagine that there would be a lot of uses for one of these smaller ones. Someone like, say, the Special Operations Command may find them more useful than the bigger sort. And I think they’d be a good fit for coastal defense. A flotilla of these smaller ones, each operating a chopper and several smaller seacraft could put up a much more effective barrier than one or two larger cutters in most cases.
