This guy was the leader of the Chechen separatists, but he was also one of the only separatists willing to play ball from what I understand.
They claim that they really wanted to arrest Maskhadov, but
he was killed by careless weapons-handling by his bodyguards.
I’m not clear on whether that means his own bodyguards accidentally killed him or that actions by his bodyguards led to a fight which ended up killing him.
As I’ve said before, the Russians have no fear of actively fighting terrorists/insurgents/minutemen, but they have problems doing so skillfully.
