Raining bombs

US Air Force B-2 Bomber Drops 80 JDAMS in Historic Test

They dropped 80 500-pound GPS-guided bombs in one 22 second pass.

That’s what I was expecting the opening hour of the Iraq invasion to be like. I thought we’d hit around 10,000 targets before dawn of D-Day.

The bombs dropped in the test were the new Mk82 500-pound JDAMs. Previous JDAMs were 1000 or 2000 pounds each. With the incredible accuracy of these units, smaller JDAMs can be used to attack the same target as larger dumb bombs because the odds of a direct hit are so high. This allows planes to attack more targets per mission and cuts way down on “collateral” damage.
