He really said these things, apparently.

Republicans “all behave the same, and they all look the same. … It’s pretty much a white Christian party.”

and

Republicans “never made an honest living in their lives,” which he later clarified to say Republican “leaders,”

Many Dems have got to be saying “with friends like this, who needs enemas?”

Also notice the subheading of the story: Even some Democrats weary of blunt talk. So while the paper is calling Dean for his remarks, they apparently think they’re true, just too “blunt” to be said. I wonder if generalizations about other groups would simply be considered “blunt talk”…
