Without them, man is nothing

Janelle Zalkovsky

Army Pfc. Janelle Zalkovsky hands out humanitarian aid items to local citizens in Thyad, Iraq, on Dec. 4, 2005. Zalkovsky is attached to the Civil Affairs Unit of the 1st Battalion, 320th Field Artillery Regiment, 101st Airborne Division deployed from Fort Campbell, Ky. DoD photo by Spc. Charles W. Gill, U.S. Army. (Released)

I’ve got to think that many Iraqi women have got to take heart in seeing female US soldiers. And I’ve got to think that that fact fuels a certain segment of the insurgency.

UPDATE: I interviewed Pfc. Zalkovsky: “We all wear the same uniform”. Also another pic.

Comments

  1. Without being negative, as I understand it probably happens, hell it happened there before the U.S. soldiers came. What is the level of prostitution in Iraq with the U.S. soldiers, I would guess it is nowhere near the levels in Vietnam. Anyone know? Yes I do realise this picture actually has nothing to do with that. It is just that if it occurs(even in very small amounts), I understand how relations between females of Iraq and U.S. soldiers could be a touchy subject for locals.

  2. Vstress, It’s very, very severely punished if you’re caught. Besides, there’s not much opportunity, from what I understand.

  3. My middle initial is ‘H’ which my ex-wife said stood for ‘Hardass,’ so I’m reluctant to own up to this. That photo deserves to be made into a wall-size poster. Two women, late teens/early twenties, substantially different cultures, one taking a risk to bring freedom, one taking a risk to accept it. Both destined to succeed. Americans, everywhere, should see that picture every day. I’m hard pressed to come up with something that better defines what our country, and its people, are all about.

  4. This is the american female in the photo above and i have to thank you for your words….i read another blog about my picture which i had no idea was even taken…and i was astounded by the comments some individuals had posted. I really liked and admired what homer had to say about it and i think his statement was very true and well written. Thank you for your support in all that our troops are doing.

  5. Janelle, You really are our modern-day hero. Forget about all the absurd stuff being said on these blogs: here you are, young and wonderful looking, putting your life at risk daily for all of us. It is on these occasions, where two cultures meet on the street, that gestures like yours can really make a difference. Be assured that your work will not go unnoticed, that your sacrifices will be appreciated by all of us not there with you. Those who write of talk otherwise either do not know the facts or are not smart enough to understand the situation. Many things have been and will be said about the merits and de-merits of this war (political, economic, religious). But what should never be put in question is the dedication of all US and allied personnel on the ground, who really are only trying to do their best to get the job done and then carry on with their lives. Good speed to you and all of your fellow soldiers (American, Iraqi, British; Italian, Polish– and anybody else I forgot) that are tying to rebuild and give a little freedom to the country. Be safe and keep up the good work! PS: mine are just a few words of sympathy. But by the tone of your answers I read around, it really seems you do not need much help–

  6.
