I’m a bit of a fan of Japanese director Akira Kurosawa. I think everyone that’s seen The Seven Samurai respects it as a masterpiece, but running a close second on my personal list is Ran, Kurosawa’s 1985 retelling of King Lear in midieval Japan.
For anyone that saw the earlier DVD release of the film, rest assured that the new Masterworks Edition is incredibly superior. It has been remastered from a high-def transfer from a remastered film negative. I think the old one was mastered from an 8mm print that had been stored at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean after it wore out. There’s a demo that does split-screen comparisons of the new and old transfers. The difference is incredible.
Check out the DVD Verdict review (at the link above) if you’re interested. Although slow-paced, the film is never boring, and is visually stunning on an epic scale. Two thumbs up from MO.
