Iraqi tennis players killed for wearing shorts

AP/MSNBC:

BAGHDAD, Iraq – An Iraqi tennis coach and two of his players were killed because they were wearing shorts, apparently in violation of a warning by Islamic extremists.

Gunmen stopped the car in which the athletes were riding and asked them to step out before shooting them Wednesday, Manham Kubba, secretary general of the Iraqi Tennis Union, said Saturday. The coach, Hussein Ahmed Rashid, was Sunni, and the two players were Shiite, Kubba said.

Sectarian violence. No war here, folks. No clash of civilizations. Simple sectarian violence.

Comments

  1. I don’t think ‘clash of civilizations’ is appropriate. ‘Clash of civilization against lack of civilization’ maybe. Or perhaps just plain ‘clash against pure evil’ would be a better description.

  2. Ok so maybe not a ‘clash of civilizations’ – More like the attack of the Barbarians. But no war here, simple sectarian violence? Are you crazy Murdoc? Come on; this is a snapshot of what the war is all about (what motivates the enemy). Ok so I just looked up sectarian and I suppose if you use the word loosely any war would be an instance of sectarian violence. And this war (ya know; the one we started to fight after 9-11) Would just be another instance of sectarian violence. The sects being the islamofascists and everyone else. But that would go against the common interpretation of the word. Right? No. THIS IS WAR! The islamofascists are barbaric scum who want to become world dictators over all Infidels (which includes any Muslims who oppose them) heck they (Muslims) wouldn’t even have to outright oppose them just do/believe things differently enough to the point where the islamofascists want to kill them. Which doesn’t take much doing (like wearing shorts for example). The solution; grind these ugly suckers into dust. ‘Sectarian violence. No war here, folks. No clash of civilizations. Simple sectarian violence.’ So are you being sarcastic here Murdoc?

  3. B.A., as I recall from watching your ‘A-Team’ TV show decades ago, you never did relly ‘get’ Murdoc’s humor. You sure did weld a mean armored train, though! Yes, he’s being sarcastic. :-)

  4. Welcome to the new Iraq. Mission Acomplished. But dont worry, Im sure the light at the end of the tunnel is just around the corner. A

  5. Aaron, I think you missed the point. (Again.) The point is that this is so much more than some little civil unrest and sectarian violence, due to nothing other than foreign troops. You can pretend all you want that if we hadn’t invaded Iraq that none of this kind of thing would happen anywhere anymore, but you’re very, very wrong. I’m just glad you aren’t in a position to make any decisions about this sort of thing, or we’d all be in deep trouble for TWICE as long as we are now!

  6. KTLA: Aron’s twisted logic should be as following: ‘if you didn’t invade Iraq, nobody would have ever been dressed in tennis shirt, therefore no one would have been killed’. QED. I am leaving in a country that used to be a communist one – where wearing jeans used to be discouraged for example, but it is not anymore. Therefore, I would recommend Aron to try North Corea or Iran as a place to live… he should enjoy. Could be fun. |o|
