U.S. reports plan to blow up NYC tunnels

The Daily News reported that the plotters wanted to blow up the Holland Tunnel, the southernmost link between Manhattan and New Jersey, in the hopes of flooding New York’s Financial District. The desired effect would be akin to the flooding that ravaged New Orleans in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, the newspaper said.

Is the Financial District below the level of the tunnel? I’ve not been to New York, but I’ve always had the impression that the tunnel went under the river. While the damage and death toll would be great, blowing the tunnel wouldn’t flood anything, would it?

What am I missing?

UPDATE: Steve at ThreatsWatch also points out the fact that the Financial District is above the water table.

  1. I have worked in the NYC Financial District for many years (I worked in the South Tower – 2 World Trade Center 80th Floor for 5 years) and that story is typical newpaper nonsense. The only thing that would get wet is the tunnel itself.

  2. Thankfully the terrorists are really stupid. The only ones more ignorant are the news paper reporters.

  3. According to the most recent updates it’s the papers that are idiots (big surprise). The plot was to attack the PATH tunnels and disrupt area transit.

  4. Shouldnt the title be ‘US reports terrorist plan to blow up NYC tunnels.’ Because I dont think we are planning on destroying our own tunnels. At least I hope not. I think I would want a second opinion on that plan. 🙂
