Mexico beat Team USA, currently comprised mostly of minor leaguers, eliminating us from the qualification tournament.
There was a chance that Roger Clemens may have pitched for us in the 2004 Athens games.
The US team had gone 3-0 in pool play, and Mexico had been 0-3 and only advanced to the tournament when the Bahamas forfeited by not showing up for their game.
Tommy Lasorda, the manager of our 2000 gold medal team, said this is a “shock and a disgrace.”
Other, however, weren’t so concerned.
“We lost a game. I don’t think it’s a setback for U.S. baseball,” said Sandy Alderson, an executive vice president in the commissioner’s office and the top American official with the team.
In my humble opinion, Mr. Alderson is confused. If he’s spinning, he should be a politician. Or a Pentagon spokesman. This is a major blow to US baseball internationally speaking.
However, I expect that the Major Leagues will manage to unilaterally crawl on somehow.
