Comments offline once again

Murdoc’s apologies, but comments have been deactivated for the time being. The spam is through the roof, and though I’ve found a way to keep over 99.99% of it from going live, every spam attempt still takes up CPU cycles and I’m on pace to exceed my quota for the current period.

For the past three weeks I’ve been averaging about 350 spams per hour 24 hours per day. In the past two and a half weeks at that pace, only 4 have made it live onto the site. That’s better than the 100-200 that used to make it online per day before, but the heightened rate of attack has forced me to turn them off for the time being.

This basically sucks, because I feel that the comments section is one of the best parts of MO and certainly one of the things I personally enjoy the most. But I’m getting hammered and I don’t know what to do about it.

I still value everyone’s feedback, so don’t hesitate to email me. I will make a point to note reader thoughts in updates to posts.

Also, if anyone has advice for how to stop the spam before it runs my comment script (therefore costing CPU cycles), please let me know.
