Just noticed this in a piece by the esteemed Christopher Dickey at Newsweek on the 1987-88 Strait of Hormuz conflict with Iran:
Then, accidentally, it was said, the Americans shot a regularly scheduled commercial airliner out of the clear blue sky above the gulf. There were 290 people on board that Iran Air flight, 66 of them children. All died.
I guess I’m unfamiliar with any serious suggestions (other than from Iran) that the shooting down of Iran Air Flight 655 on July 3, 1988, was intentional. Even if you give full credence to all the claims of recklessness and an over-driven commanding officer, that’s not the same as claiming that shooting down a civilian airliner was not accidental.
Maybe I’m wrong.
