Stryker soldiers in action

I’ve been wanting to do a big post on the all the action that the Strykers have been seeing since moving out to the Baqubah area in Diyala province a week ago, but I just haven’t had time to do it justice. Suffice it to say that they’re not sitting around getting fat.

Here’s a great bit of B-roll video footage from DVIDS: Heavy Fire at Buhriz Station. A lot of the action photos I’ve been seeing look to have been taken at this same time.

Back in January I noted reports that al Qaeda forces were apparently fleeing Baghdad and headed to the Diyala region. This could be them, or it could be insurgent or militia forces. Probably a mix of all of the above.

In any event, at least a fair number of them seem to be standing and fighting, which is in our favor. You’d think that many Shiite militias would consider retreating again toward the Iranian border area, but either we’ve closed that escape route off or these guys aren’t terribly welcome in ol’ Persia.

This is the sort of fight that the Stryker brigades were built for: mobile infantry tactics, in and around built-up areas, with the bad guys on the run.
