Heightened Threat Environment

Report: Al-Qaida eyes Iraq ties for U.S. attack
Top U.S. security agencies highlight ‘persistent and evolving threat’

The terrorist network Al-Qaida will likely leverage its contacts and capabilities in Iraq to mount an attack on U.S. soil, according to a new National Intelligence Estimate on threats to the United States.

The declassified key findings, to be released publicly on Tuesday, were obtained in advance by The Associated Press.

The report lays out a range of dangers — from al-Qaida to Lebanese Hezbollah to non-Muslim radical groups — that pose a –persistent and evolving threat” to the country over the next three years.

More mindless fear mongering, of course. Or released as due to the ongoing Congressional debate over Iraq. Anything anyone does to due to this report is a grab for power.

Unless, of course, an attack is successful. Then someone will be to blame for not protecting us.

Recall all the finger pointing and game playing over the 8/6/01 Presidential Daily Brief.

  1. The FBI report, issued last week, says the smuggling organization ‘used to smuggle Mexicans, but decided to smuggle Iraqi or other Middle Eastern individuals because it was more lucrative.’ Each individual would be charged a fee of $20,000 to $25,000, according to the report. Yeah, too bad Bush and his good buddy McCain couldn’t have given these people amnesty like they and Teddy Kennedy wanted. After all, these people are doing the kind of work Americans won’t do, like killing thousands of their fellow Americans in terrorist attacks. ———————— Three people were observed running from the meeting house to a nearby house. A U.S. Air Force F16 Fighting Falcon dropped two 500-pound GPS-guided bombs on the second house. I am so relieved that they were able to use a couple $10,000 500 lb bombs on these bastards. Flying in a B-52 loaded with 2000 lb bombs and leveling the area might have made someone in that country reluctant to support these terrorist psychos, but the metrosexual Generals in this war would never have any of that. Too much ‘collateral damage.’ Just because we’re fighting a war, doesn’t mean we want to hurt anyone – except our own boys. It’s ok if they get killed. They’re expendable.

  2. I’d say he’s being very sarcastic. This war has been extremely politicized, even by Vietnam war standards.

  3. Well, you could say I was imitating the media coverage and the spin the pundits will put on this. Every threat is ridiculed as a joke. Every warning is mocked by those who believe terrorism isn’t a threat. Every alert is held up as an example of how the government is trying to keep us scared. ‘No Fly’ lists are challenged and intelligence and law enforcement efforts are fought tooth and nail. But they simultaneously carry on about how George Bush ‘let’ 9/11 happen because he and the FBI and the CIA all ignored obvious warning signs beforehand. They want to have it both ways. Since they run the stories, I guess they can.

  4. It’s amazing how the media takes terrorist press releases and runs with them. The news here had a headline, something like ‘Al-Qaeda preparing for attacks in US’. Not ‘Al-Qaeda CLAIMS they are preparing for attacks in US’, which would be ya know, more true. After all, talk is cheap.
