Sea Fighter (FSF 1) builder in trouble

Mr. Completely tipped me off to this development over the weekend: Nichols Brothers Closes Doors

He quotes local coverage:

One of Whidbey Island’s largest private employers, Nichols Bros. Boat Builders Inc. abruptly laid off its employees and closed its doors Friday, citing financial problems and a pending lawsuit.

The company, which has employed about 250 people in recent years at facilities in Freeland and Langley, had operated on Whidbey Island since 1964.

Mr. Completely knows the Nichols family and writes

Losing Nichols Brothers Boat Works is a huge loss to our community.

Meanwhile, here are some recent stories that indicate all isn’t lost:

Nichols Bros. still in state ferry plan and Big boat builder may reopen soon.

And don’t miss this great pic of the USS Sea Fighter (FSF 1).
