Opting for the lesser of the two evils

767 Air Tanker Deal Is A Go

Well, the compromise plan to lease only 20 767 tankers and buy up to 80 more outright is on. Although this is far wiser than leasing all 100, I still question the real need to get new tankers at all. At least so quickly that we’re willing to spend billions more than we would have to otherwise. The Air Force worked overtime to cover up study results that indicate the current fleet is fine for years to come and has cancelled some maintenance programs, requiring the retirement of current planes before they would have to otherwise.

Still, I’ve got no problems with more (and better) tankers supporting our military. I think Senator John McCain (R-AZ) deserves a big pat on the back for his efforts here.
