Omaha mall is supposedly a “gun free” zone

Turns out that the Westroads Mall in Omaha, Nebraska, where Robert Hawkins killed 8 with an SKS medium-powered rifle is, guess what, a Gun Free Zone.

For an overview of all the media discussing this fact, see GunPundit, Murdoc’s fledgling gun-oriented site.

From FoxNews:

But despite the massive news coverage, none of the media coverage, at least by 10 a.m. Thursday, mentioned this central fact: Yet another attack occurred in a gun-free zone.

Surely, with all the reporters who appear at these crime scenes and seemingly interview virtually everyone there, why didn’t one simply mention the signs that ban guns from the premises?

Nebraska allows people to carry permitted concealed handguns, but it allows property owners, such as the Westroads Mall, to post signs banning permit holders from legally carrying guns on their property.

The same was true for the attack at the Trolley Square Mall in Utah in February. But again the media coverage ignored this fact.

UPDATE: SayUncle:

Some asshat named David Nason:

NEBRASKA, the farming state with the highest per capita gun ownership in the US, began the year with LB-454, a new state law allowing people 21 years and over to carry a concealed handgun pretty much wherever they go.

Applicants must pass a routine police check, complete a basic handgun training course (most are run by ex-cops) and pay $US100 ($115) for a five-year permit. It’s as simple as that.

Nebraska marked the end of the year yesterday with a bloodbath at the Westroads shopping mall in Omaha, the state’s largest city. Eight people were shot dead and several others are fighting for their lives.

And you’ll notice that the killer had no such permit, was under the age of 21, and didn’t use a handgun. He was also prohibited by law to even be in possession of a gun. So, the two are not related at all. Yet, the implication is that CCW laws caused this crime. David Nason is an idiot or thinks his readers are.

And just yesterday I noted a writer claiming that the sunset of the AWB was putting automatic weapons onto the streets.

  1. You can always count on the ‘tards in the media to call any long gun ‘A high powered assault rifle’. Who cares about the truth as long as you can sell advertising, right? Morons.

  2. Hey, if it’s higher powered than those wimpy pieces of garbage we make our soldiers use in battle, it’s a ‘high powered assault rifle,’ right? I mean, we wouldn’t let our boys go to war with pop guns, right? RIGHT?

  3. Don’t worry Dfens, the media will absolutely consider the M16 and its variants a high power weapon. I mean, it looks scary, it has to be. The guy could have used a .22 semi auto, and if it looked scary, it would have probably been a high powered rifle. Everyone here should know by now that the MSM is not interested in reporting facts and truth, but in purveying their biases and opinions. If linking this murderer to guns advances those biases and agendas, then great! Pissing on the truth is OK as long as it serves the greater good, right? And they are all much smarter than us country bumpkins, so its OK if they just go ahead and make those decisions for us.

  4. You guys have a point about misrepresentation: I just saw on Yahoo a report that seems to imply that the weapon was an AK47, yet the picture the local news displayed this morning was of an SKS with AK style mag (removable or not, couldn’t tell). Now which is right and which is misrepresentation? I mean, they were reporting ‘SKS’ all day, and now suddenly its an AK47 ‘assault’ weapon. Either way, this still suck the big one around here. My father works in Omaha, and he said the stores were just about deserted. Who could blame everyone? I’d be worried about copy-cat killers too.

  5. Hey! If it was good enough for LeMay, it’s good enough for us! LOL! I still maintain the biggest problem with 5.56 effectiveness is a combination of bullet design & barrel length (or lack thereof in the M4), though there’s no arguing given equal barrel lengths the 7.62 x 51 has about 3 times the energy of the 5.56. Virutally everyone of these @$$holes who decide to slaughter some company, go somewhere they’re assured of an unarmed population of victims. None of these hate filled morons is attacking heavily armed platoons of marines for a reason. Secondly they all want ot be ‘someone’ instead of the insignificant sack of flour they are, which as you’ve noted, the media hands to them on a golden 24/7 coverage platter…………thereby ensuring future ratings when the next several occur. I’m convinced, ff more people carried handguns, and knew how to use them, and were willing to; this type of thing would happen less often, and/or the casualty totals would be lower.

  6. Flanker, you hit the nail on the head. Look at the Salt Lake mall shooting. Look at the almost ‘Columbine’ that was stopped by a Vice Principle who ran a half mile out and back to get his gun from his car which was parked off campus so that he didn’t illigally have a gun on campus. We hear very little about that because it doesn’t fit the MSM agenda. Screw them. I’m with Dave Champion, and Ted Nugent. The Second Ammendment and my god given right to self defense are my concealed carry permit. As long as I don’t have to draw down on anyone, whos to know if I am carrying or not? This is an opinion and not to be taken as admission that I am violating unconstitutional laws.

  7. I didn’t see the yahoo article but during the Omaha Police debriefing I believe I heard the chief refer to the weapon as an ‘civilianized AK47’ and then later during the same conference refer to it as a SKS. ????? By the way, if you are a disturbed kook loner or an up and coming terrorist wannabee, look for the sign at the URL below, and you’ll most likely find a completely unarmed populace with 99.9% confidence. Just like at Westroads. http://www.nsp.state.ne.us/Docs/forms/CCW_Sign.pdf By the way, Omaha also requires gun registration and I heard a special permit to have an ‘assault weapon’ within city limits as well. Good to see that working out for them.

  8. What pisses me off is the military base I work at is a gun free zone too. I wonder if they got the, ‘come in here and shoot whoever you want’ signs up before the Christmas rush? It being a ‘gun free zone’ didn’t stop that Lockheed guy who shot some people in their Meridian, Mississippi plant. If I had my way, you’d not only be allowed to carry guns onto airplanes, they’d have a requirement that a certain number of people were packing. Gun free zone! What a crock.

  9. dfens, i may not agree with many thing you say, but you got it smack on there. A ‘gun free zone’ is really a EASY TARGET ZONE.

  10. That’s a good first step toward a more enlightened life ;-). Seriously though, it’s like the anti-gun nazis are out there saving grandma from the 6’2′ 250 lb ‘armed’ assalents instead of making her easy prey. You’ve got to wonder what world they’re from. Here’s a clue, morons, Mr. 250 doesn’t need a gun, grandma does. What do you think it takes, 2, maybe 3 active neurons to figure that one out? To quote Dilbert, these people ‘have a brain the size of a marble that’s twice as smooth.’

  11. It’s funny how differently things can go down in a ‘zone’ that’s not free of guns. Like when this woman shot the bastard who was trying to kill a bunch of people in that church in Denver. She saved hundreds of lives instead of worrying about the ‘rights’ of the terrorist psycho would-be-mass murder. Even so, there are probably Canadians out there right now who think it’s just horrible how those Americans have guns every where and use them indiscriminatly to defend people who go to church. Eh.

  12. ‘I saw him coming through the doors, and I took cover, and I waited for him to get closer…I identified myself, engaged him, and took him down.’ She spoke unemotionally, but the first words she said were in tribute to the victims. ‘I just want you to know it’s an honor to be here and I want to extend my sympathy to the families of the victims and of the gunman. And I mean that very sincerely,’ she said. ‘I just prayed for the Holy Spirit to guide me, my hands weren’t even shaking.’ – Denver Post

Now that’s how a Christian puts down human waste!
