42nd Iraqi Army Brigade with M16 Rifles

SADR CITY CHECKPOINTS
The 42nd Iraqi Army Brigade stops at a checkpoint in Sadr City, Iraq, to assess conditions, May 28, 2008. U.S. Army photo by Spc. Daniel Herrera

Flattops, though they’ve just got the suitcase handles installed on the rails.

I keep thinking photos like this would make the Saddam-era Iraqi army collectively piss itself.

  1. And just like that (*snaps fingers*), the Iraqi military becomes a force to be reckoned with. What a beautiful thing. I can’t wait until American forces stand down and withdraw now. 25 MILLION newly freed people. All thanks to the Army, Navy, Air Force and Marines… and now, the Iraqi military, who are proving to be as bad-ass as our own in recent months. Whichever branch trained them deserves special kudos. I’m going to be the anti-Reid, and unilaterally declare that ‘This war is won’.

  2. ’25 MILLION newly freed people. All thanks to the Army, Navy, Air Force and Marines…’ And guess who will take credit for the entire thing GOD FORBID if the BIG ‘O’ Democrat wins the presidential election next November?

  3. Yep, the man is a Leninist (tell them what they want to hear and then do whatever the hell you want when you get into power). Still, the truth is, he ain’t done crap.

  4. Bram, I remember the media coverage during DS. Saddam’s military was a battle-hardened force of expert desert fighters with umpty-thousand tanks and umptier-thousand artillery pieces. The Republican Guard units were all that and breathed fire. Heh, I even remember a front page pic in Stars and Stripes at the time, a pic from my rinky-dink hometown of, wouldn’t you know it, war protesters. Couldn’t believe my eyes.
