No Puppy Tossing

That should be a no-brainer, but apparently not: Marine expelled over YouTube puppy video

The Marine Corps said Wednesday it was expelling one Marine and disciplining another for their roles in a video showing a Marine throwing a puppy off a cliff while on patrol in Iraq…

“The actions seen in the Internet video are contrary to the high standards we expect of every Marine and will not be tolerated,” Marine Corps Base Hawaii said in a news release. “The vast majority of Marines conduct their duties with honor and compassion that makes American people proud.”

I expect that some might question whether ridding the Corps of a trained Marine over a puppy is the best decision in a time of war, but this was just so retarded it’s tough to argue against it, in Murdoc’s mind.

First, in today’s world you’ve got to realize that anything you do might show up on YouTube. Secondly, the puppy tossing is only being filmed because cameras are cheap and small. Third, the film only gets seen because of the internet. Finally, does the Marine even toss the puppy in a world with no YouTube?

  1. Not that I am condoning what this guy did, he should have his ass kicked for what he did in my opinion, but you’ve got to wonder about a country that pays a guy to kill people and fires him for killing a dog.

  2. Dfens: Well, if he just tossed people off a cliff for yucks, videotaped it, and ended up on YouTube, he’d be in even more trouble than doing it to a puppy. Conversely, if he shot a dog that was attacking him or others during the course of his duties, he wouldn’t be in trouble at all. So I don’t wonder about a country who pays a guy to kill people in combat but fires him for killing a dog for yucks and videotaping it. Not at all.

  3. People that enjoy cruelty for its own sake have no place in our military. Not just because its wrong and sick, but because this is a war of ideas and propaganda, and crap like this only hurts the goals we are supposed to be fighting for. As far as propaganda use by the enemy goes, this is barely a blip on the radar. But it was the same kind of stupid and sadistic behavior that led to Abu Ghraib, a debacle that helped set us back two years in Iraq. Any time stuff like this comes up, I think its important for the military to jump on it right away and make sure all know it is not tolerated, before it presents itself in an even more disgusting and harmful way.

  4. Dogs are held in very low esteem by Muslims. Ironically, the firing of this person for killing a dog could lead to propaganda that we consider Iraqis to be lower than dogs, which is a very grave insult. If this is how we ‘win hearts and minds’ then yet again we should give it a little more thought. Ya’ know, there’s a lot of things that used to be taken care of with a good old fashioned ass whipping that didn’t have to go to court. I guess we’re just way too ‘civilized’ now.

  5. You can try to put words in my mouth, Murdoc, but they’re right here to read. Why don’t you do that, ok?

  6. By the way, what I wrote was critical of this kind of crap:

The 15-second video, which was posted to the video sharing Web site bebo.com then circulated on the Web, triggered public outrage. Some who recognized the Marine posted the phone number and address of his Monroe family on the Internet, prompting harassment. The family received threatening phone calls over the weekend, but did not report them to the police. Snohomish County sheriff’s spokesperson Rebecca Hover said patrol cars have been circling the home to make sure the family is left alone. The family has disconnected the phone line, according to the Everett Herald newspaper. – KOMO News

Of course, some of us would rather error on the side of our soldiers, if an error is to be made. That’s an anachronism today, naturally. If you want to pile on, maybe you can post their name and address here too, Murdoc. You can entitle it, thanks for your son’s service to his country, we’re stalking you.
