AW1, I’m all for stropping draft-dodgers of the franchise, their right to hold a [ublic office, etc. That’s more or less in line with existing selective service law (except for the disenfranchisement) so it wouldn’t be much of a grasp. Never mind that. What I want to know is just what this multimillion-man organization is going to be doing with itself. They’re going to be useless for most military purposes. Are they going to be working soup kitchens? Searching airline baggage? Building roads? Picking apples? The Soviets went that route- apart from the soup kitchens, that is- with poor results. I’d be opposed to this for all sorts of reasons, not the least of which is the horrifying effect it would have on military readiness, but for the moment it’s doesn’t pass the horse-laugh test.

The Army and Marines don’t want a bunch of un-motivated, disgruntled shit-birds. I don’t want them near me. We don’t have the budget, the facilities, the equipment, or the personnel to train them. It would give us a very big, very shitty Army. Tim – you and the Navy can have them. Good luck.

Well, I have been making some typos these pasr gew weeks because I have no depth perception and only about 2/3rds use of one eye, the other being inop at the moment. Once I have abother round of surgery, things should be ‘looking’ better. Sigh. As to national service, I respectfully disagree with your assesment of it’s constitutionality. In each and every case brought before the US Courts, including the Supereme Court Conscription was found to ve completely legal.

No reason not to do it? How about the fact that its unconstitutional and constitutes slavery? Just because they pay you does not absolve them of the fact that you are an indentured servant, subject to government procecution if you decide to quit, or speak publicly against your boss. If you want to volunteer, go right ahead, but dont you fracking DARE force me to ‘volunteer’ just because you ‘think I should.’ My rights are NOT yours to manipulate just because ‘you are someone that has been there and think that everyone needs to serve’. You want press gangs? You’ll find that us individuals, while we MIGHT be taken by them, WILL not go quietly, nor will we go peacfully and it will COST you alot more than you gain from ‘volunteering’ us. Of course according to the CONSTITUTION we are supposed to have a Militia and a very LIMITED standing army, but thats another argument. BTW AW1 Tim, you might wanna check your keyboard…you are getting some pretty bad typos there. You want my freedom? ‘Come and Take It!’

Wekk, speaking as someone who has been there, I am toitally in favour of Mr. Ranhel’s idea. Dradt everyone for 3 year’s service when they turn 18 or graduate from highschool, whichever comes later. If they frop out of school, they get inducted the same day they tirn 18. Pay them minimum wage and house them in barracks. Let them eat at the chow hall. Bus them every day to their work site (of civilian( and hand them an MRE for their lumch. Gree medicak and dental care. Gree work uniforms, or special ‘national service’ uniforms, etc. 30 days vacation each year. Free bus ticket home and back for leave. Free bus ticket home when their service is done. I can find no good reason to not do this. There is simply no valid reason for an 18 year old to fo to college without having some real-life work experience before hand. Hecj, if ebery college student is 21, then there is no more problem with under-age drinking, eh? I say fo gor it. The nation gets a huge boost of available workers, and the kids get to learn what work really is. They learn the value of a dollar, and that’s for damned sure. For those who fail to report? Strop them of their right to vote, hold a [ublic office, a government job (of any level) the ability to get federal assistance of any kind, etc. Anyway, that’s my thoughts on the matter. Other’s ,ileage may vary….. :)
