Vietnam Ping-Pong

Now Afghanistan is Vietnam again.

It was. Then Iraq was. Now it’s Afghanistan again.

Here are a couple things that don’t seem to have occurred to a lot of people:

  1. Maybe neither Iraq nor Afghanistan is the Vietnam they’re looking for.
  2. Maybe even Vietnam wasn’t the Vietnam they’re looking for.

  1. Well,

If they want to make either country into another Vietnam, it’s real easy to do.

First, after soundly and decisively defeating the enemy, pull your troops back and allow him to reform.

Second, allow the enemy to move his forces close to yours and build up supplies.

Third, declare victory and pull your troops out.

Fourth, cut all ties and funding to your former allies.

Fifth, when the enemy invades and causes millions of lives to be lost and a dictatorship to be installed, enslaving all the former allies who survived, start wringing your hands a proclaim what a mistake it was to be there in the first place.

Sixth. Allow Oliver Stone and any other anti-American film maker to put out propaganda films that continue to advance the myth that American soldiers were all lower-class pot heads who fragged their officers and didn’t give a crap about anything. Never ever allow any facts to get in the way of the storyline, either.

Remember the storyline: War is always bad. It is especially bad if American soldiers are involved. In fact, if American soldiers are involved, it must be a criminal action, and heads need to roll and reparations and apologies handed out all round. Except when a Democrat is in the White House. then it’s a Peace-keeping force with noble humanitarian intentions.

    Jesus wept.

  2. And yet, on the statue to John Reynolds, A Union General killed at Gettysburg, it has the following engraved upon it:

“None died here with more glory, though many died, and there was much glory”.

  3. Once the press has told the world that Afghanistan is un-winnable, and thoroughly sold the American people on the misguided and reprehensible actions of their own government, then the ground work is laid for Obama to pull out, while laying the blame at his predecessor’s feet. The new president has no more desire to win in Afghanistan than he does in Iraq, if you ask me. To people like him, as Tim pointed out, American power is always bad and unjust, so better to not use it at all.

Maybe this whole thing will become Jimmy Carter 2, electric boogaloo. Let American power and influence wane, because it’s just not nice to the rest of the world to use it. Maybe I’m too jaded. But if Obama, Newsweek, and everyone else that shares their view had their way, Iraq would be tearing itself apart in mutual cultural genocide right now, and they would be patting themselves on the back for getting our troops out. Any one of them that doesn’t concede that they were wrong has no credibility to me.
