A lot of internet searches are bringing people to a post with an image of the cruiser USS Bainbridge which was retired in 1996. Here’s the destroyer Bainbridge which is involved in the current pirate scenario.

[...] UPDATE April 2009: Lots of folks are coming here looking for an image of the USS Bainbridge (DDG 96) because of the pirates story. The USS Bainbridge in this post is an older ship that was decommissioned in 1996. For an image of the new USS Bainbridge, go HERE. [...]

  2. SwissFreek Says:

Weird, I don’t see R2D2 anywhere on the ship. Shouldn’t there be one ahead of the forecastle just below the (I assume) fire director antenna?

  3. Murdoc Says:

DDG 85 and up were built without CIWS. Never made sense to me regardless of whatever else they’ve got on the ship.

I’ve heard that some of these ships have since been seen with a CIWS added aft, though. I’ve never looked into that, but if anyone has the info pass it on.

  4. Murdoc Says:

    I found this article:
    Analyst: DDGs without CIWS vulnerable.

The plan was all along to add one Block 1B CIWS to the ships built without, but only some (at most) have received it yet. It will be aft. Here’s a good pic of USS Gridley (DDG 101) with R2D2 visible above the helicopter hangar:

I’d still be concerned that there’s a lot of territory that gun can’t cover alone. The Block 1B has been upgraded to take on boats and helicopters as well as missiles and aircraft.

    Block 1B info:

  5. Chad Says:

They should stick 3 or 4 c-ram’s on each of these. R2-D2 is good, C-ram is better.

  6. Murdoc Says:

The C-RAM uses a CIWS Block 1B. Not sure how the sensors and targeting compares to what’s on a DDG.

  7. Jay Tea Says:

Hey, Murdoc, want a cheap post? Talk about the man the various USS Bainbridges have been named after — especially the conflicts he served in.

    The irony is especially ironic.

  8. Jay Tea Says:

Murdoc, it just gets better. The Bainbridge is being backed up by the USS Halyburton…

Obama Calls UNC Coach from Air Force One to Congratulate Him on NCAA Championship

Does he call family of the Captain being hijacked from his US Flagged ship??…….NO !!!

  10. The Old Fart Says:

Obama would rather talk. We need Uncle Tommy back to send in the SEALS and when the Alabama docks, with it’s yard arms out,(I probable have that wrong as I was not in the Navy), and the pirates just a swinging in the breeze.

Called UNC coach and not the Captain’s family……DISGRACEFUL.
