I think there were some direct federal taxes during the War of 1812 as well as the Civil War. 1913 was the first peace-time direct federal tax. Milton Friedman talked about the first 120 years of U.S. history as an incredible unprecedented run of freedom that will never be repeated.

OK, 1787-1860 if the USA didn't exist under the Articles of Confederation (it certainly didn't exist before 1783; 1776 was conception, not birth).

"The 15 years between President Bill Clinton’s 1993 tax hike and Barack Obama’s increase in cigarette taxes in February was the longest stretch in U.S. history without a federal income tax increase".

What about 1783-1860?

Bill: Well, I meant it as snarkiness from the general DC direction. No slight to Montana at all. But I see that it could have been taken the opposite way. My apologies.

For the record, DC can't even run DC. I don't know what makes them think they can run anyone else.

"New gun law aimed at asserting sovereignty
Montana law asserts that Montana runs Montana, not D.C. Who do they think they’re kidding? I mean really."

Speaking as a Montanan, what exactly are you trying to say here?
