I think there were some direct federal taxes during the War of 1812 as well as the Civil War. 1913 was the first peace-time direct federal tax. Milton Friedman talked about the first 120 years of U.S. history as an incredible unprecedented run of freedom that will never be repeated.

OK, 1787-1860 if the USA didn’t exist under the Articles of Confederation (it certainly didn’t exist before 1783; 1776 was conception, not birth).

For the record, DC can’t even run DC. I don’t know what makes them think they can run anyone else.
