In this case it was a 5 year enlistment. It guarantees a man a shot at becoming a Green Beret. It does not guarantee he will make it. The guy I know started basic with 57 other young (and not so young(men in his platoon and part of the next one. Two and a half years later, he received his Green Beret and assginment to an "A" team. Roughly 7 others he enlisted with also made it. Maybe another 7 had not passed some portion of the difficult curriculum. Spec Ops troops are gold. But few make it through.
