Steven Den Beste at USS Clueless points out something he wrote about back in February.
He [Rumsfeld] listed several he considered supportive and others he thought might come around to backing the operation.
“And then there are three or four countries that have said they won’t do anything. I believe Libya, Cuba and Germany are the ones that I have indicated won’t help in any respect,” Rumsfeld told the House Armed Services Committee.
And in response, the Germans were outraged. I almost busted a gut laughing when I saw what Rummy said.
Well, hindsight is 20/20 and all, but once again our SecDef was proven completely wrong. Libya is cooperating quite nicely, thank-you very much. That leaves Germany and Cuba from Rumsfeld’s assertion. Why is it that I’m expecting Castro to send help before Schroeder? Am I really that cynical about Old Europe?
The Germans have got to be embarrassed that Libya is out of Rummy’s doghouse before they are. But at least he didn’t lump France in there with Cuba and Germany. That would be too insulting even for him.
