Who could have ever seen this coming?

Most red ink ever: $9 trillion over next decade

In a chilling forecast, the White House is predicting a 10-year federal deficit of $9 trillion — more than the sum of all previous deficits since America’s founding.

  1. Hope & Change. Hoping I got some change left when the dust settles. Thank God for all the fast-food dollar menus, or folks would start to starve.

  2. Too bad too many republicans abandoned their principles during the previous administration. Otherwise their complaints about this joker of a president would be more credible.

Maybe by 2010 the American people might give them another chance to deliver.

    Agree 100%. Heck, 110%.

  4. 11 Bravo – I’ll be giving different Republicans (fiscally conservative ones) a chance in the coming years.

I’m currently reading “Patriots: A Novel of Survival in the Coming Collapse”. The collapse is caused by runaway deficit spending a bad monetary policy. Scary that the day after I started the book, the projected deficit jumped $2 Trillion.

  5. Bram,
I happened to see that book at B&N just last weekend…I opened at random, read a couple paragraphs, and chuckled. It read like the old “Survivalist” series by Ahearn I read when I was a kid:

“Just then, Rourke swung up his stainless twin Detonics .45s and sent two 180 grain semi jacketed hollowpoints crashing into the standard issue steel helmets of the two closest Russians.

“Before they had crashed to the ground, Rourke felt his pistols lock back, and instead of slipping them into his double Alessi shoulder rig, he tugged his double edged AG Russell Sting IA combat knife from its sheath and had already cut the windpipes of two more Russian soldiers…” etc etc for about 2000 pages.

  6. Kinda like the Michael Bay of books, sounds like. Only way more didactic.

Its funny. I think a lot of swing voters went for Obama precisely because they were sick of the Republican Congress and administration of the previous eight years having so little spending restraint. Obviously there are many other reasons, like the Iraq war (what Iraq war? Not an issue anymore with Obama). The gag is, Obama gets sworn in, and immediately, within eight months of taking over, he and a Democratic congress manage to surpass the worst of the Bush year deficits by a huge factor. According to Wiki, our total national debt will surpass the total value of everything we make and do in a given year by 2011. That’s frigging ridiculous. The entire country would have to work for free for an entire godamn year to pay back what we owe.

  7. To paraphrase PJ O’Rorke, writing about our deficit problem 20 years ago:

“The national debt, as best I understand it, means we owe billions and billions of dollars to ourselves. I suggest we collect and party down.”

  8. I have noticed a lot of product placement for fancy tactical gear I have no interest in. Kind of an LL Bean survival guide.

  9. Bram,

Literature for gear queers. Liked it at the time though. Thought it was perfectly normal for a 12-ish year old kid to know that sh!t.

Wasn’t I surprised to realize (much later) it made me an utter nerd.

  10. <– saw it coming the moment he took the mandatory senior year government classes in high school and found out the platforms for each of the candidates.
