Operation New Dawn

Reconnaissance Marines in Afghanistan have launched a new operation near the former Taliban stronghold of Marjah aimed at pushing insurgents out of nearby areas they have used to launch repeated attacks on Marine patrols.

Operation New Dawn will be “attacking areas that insurgents use in transit to and from Marjah,” said 1st Lt. Joshua Benson, a spokesman for 1st Marine Division (Forward), based in Afghanistan. Marines with 1st Reconnaissance Battalion, out of Camp Pendleton, Calif., launched the operation June 15.

New Dawn is an extension of Operation Moshtarak, Benson said. The Corps launched that mission in February with a massive assault to push the Taliban, drug traffickers and other insurgents from Marjah, a sprawling rural area in central Helmand province with more than 80,000 people.

  1. Meanwhile, whilst we re-enact the Societ Army’s Operation Magistral ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Magistral ), how’s the hunt for Al Qaeda’s senior leadership going?

You know, that terrorist organization that the US military gave-up looking for?

That was the only justifiable reason for being there, yet after 9 years of fighting, Osama Bin Laden is still free — the (Br)asshats let him go.

You’d never know that the military that can’t catch a spoiled, whiny, grungy rich kid after SEVENTEEN YEARS (remember the WTC bombing in 1993?) belongs to the same country that toppled the regimes of Hitler, Tojo, and Mussolini in less than 5 years.

    1. If I had to parcel out credit for those that way, I would only say the USA for Tojo, but the USSR for Hitler and Britain for Mussolini (don’t forget that there were more British and Commonwealth forces in action than US ones clear up until D-Day, and Italy ousted Mussolini before that).

WW-II was a different era, Blacktail. Back in the “good” old days the motivational factor was National Defense and totally destroy the enemy. That included civilians along with the military. Gen. Curtis LeMay and Gen. George patton both had the right idea how to win a war. Plus they had a free hand to anialiate, anialate and aniliate from the politicians!

Now namby-pamby politics is the current motivator. (i.e. McCrystal and such) and the false notion that you can win the hearts and minds….Bullshit!……Afghanistan is another, albeit longer Vietnam.

In my 68-years I’ve come to accept: You can’t go home again!

  3. And we’ve spent nearly 9 years and a metric assload of $$ to train and equip the Afghan army and police- 2 institutions that I’m not convinced ever really cared to exist.

I’m not sure, frankly, what our investment in them has yielded, but a competent fighting force would not seem to be it.
