Here are some predictions from my party this weekend:

  • Murdoc: NE 38-20
  • My Wife: NE 38-21
  • My Brother: NE 27-17
  • My Mom: NE 27-13
  • My Son: NE 13-7
  • My Daughter: NE wins

I think New York will play decently and the Patriots won’t run away with it, but I also don’t think that the outcome will really ever be in doubt.

For the record, I also happen to think that, though the New England receivers are obviously awesome, the Giants receivers are plenty good.

UPDATE: No refunds on Super Bowl predictions.

Not “re-signs.” Resigns. Apparently so.

It was a rough year for the Redskins, with numerous injuries to key players and the death of Sean Taylor, but despite some questionable calls Gibbs pulled the team together under a back-up QB and guided them into the playoffs.

I expected Gibbs to coach one more year and then move into a front office position with the team.

Next year’s schedule looks like about as easy as it’s ever going to be in the NFC East.

Skipping Anthem an un-America move by NFL, Steelers

Classy:

The NFL and the Pittsburgh Steelers decided to start their Monday Night Football game without the National Anthem according to the Denver Post.

The game had been delayed 25 minutes due to weather.

The comments on the article show the classlessness of some folks, combined with probable unpatriotism on the part of at least a few of them.

people are so sensitive these days skipping the national anthem one time will not “take away our patriotism” hell there’s a team called the patriots

Typical clear thinking. Skipping the national anthem won’t hurt patriotism but the name of a team will help it.

Listening to some knucle head singing a our song in the middle of a stadium makes you a Patriot? So, if they sang it twice does that make you twice the patroit?
Sad,Sad,Sad.

Another brain surgeon here. Apparently tradition means nothing to him, so at least its easy to see why he’s clueless about this.

OH MY GOD THEY DIDN’T SING THE NATIONAL ANTHEM!!!! LETS CANCEL THE REST OF THE SEASON!!!

Now this is simply overreaction the other way. It’s obvious by the use of ALL CAPS that this individual is severely upset by the incident, but canceling the rest of the season seems a bit much. Or, alternatively, he’s a moron.

GIVE ME A BREAK. With all the sh*t going on in the world, someone has to get BENT about THIS??? PUH-LEEZE. This is why I don’t own a gun.

First, the only folks I see getting “BENT” over this are those who don’t think that skipping the national anthem matters. Honestly, it looks pretty much the same anytime anyone’s patriotism is questioned. For folks who say it doesn’t matter, they sure seem to be hypersensitive about it.

Secondly, what the hades does owning a gun have to do with anything?

Give me a break. with all the crap going on in the world, someone has to get bent about this??? puh-leeze. FInd somethingmore important to worry about, people.

This is hilarious. One minute after the “BENT” poster who doesn’t own a gun posted, she posted again. This message is very similar, but we can already see the fire going out. Not only is it “bent” instead of “BENT”, but the gun doesn’t even enter the conversation.

Oh come on people, get real. The damn song is too long as it is, and really, how patriotic is the song anyway? It’s a song about fighting, a battle we lost i might add. The melody is from an old English drinking song. America is a better song, better melody, and describes our country in a much better way. and is way shorter.

“A battle we lost i might add”? Is he British? If so, what do we bloody care about what he thinks about the song? If he’s American, he’s historically challenged (at best), a sadly common condition.

At this point, Murdoc gives up. It’s really sad to see these folks insisting loudly that this doesn’t matter and why is anyone talking about it and who cares and on and on and on. They sure seem to care. Probably just trying to show how patriotic they are by dissenting. “Hah! Hah! Look at me, demonstrating my patriotism by insulting the Star Spangled Banner!

sean_taylor_36.jpg

I always thought Taylor looked better wearing #36, but he switched to #21 after Fred Smoot left the team. Now Smoot’s back, but Taylor kept the number. So here’s an earlier shot of Taylor in #36.

He was an obviously gifted player, the sort that could change a game all by himself. His off-field troubles seemed to be mostly behind him, and he had stopped it with the stupid late hit penalties (and spitting) on the field. He was poised to become one of best safeties in the history of the Redskins, but it apparently was not meant to be.

It will be some time before we get the whole story about exactly what happened, but in the meantime just keep his daughter, his family, and his teammates in your thoughts.

Whitecaps capture another crown

Midwest League champions once again:

After taking a 2-0 lead in the best-of-five Midwest League Championship series the Whitecaps were taken to a fifth and deciding game Saturday night by the Beloit Snappers.

And the best team during the season proved they were the best team in the playoffs, capturing their fifth MWL Champion in the franchise’s 14th season with an 11-5 victory over the Snappers, winning the best-of-five series, 3-2.

The Whitecaps became the the first team since 1984 to win back-to-back MWL titles, a feat the Appleton Foxes, renamed the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers, accomplished in 1982, ’83 and ’84.

Though I don’t follow baseball all that closely any longer, minor league games are always fun to check out. Tom Brookens, a longtime favorite of Tigers fans, managed the club this season.

Congratulations to the Caps.

Blocked field goal secures Appalachian State’s upset of Michigan

ESPN wonders if it might not be the biggest upset ever. I don’t know about that, but obviously Michigan’s entire season is basically over and this will stand as one of the most shameful games in the history of the, well, of the history.

I guess the U-M vs. Ohio State game won’t be such a big deal this year, huh?

I caught the very early part of the game and saw Michigan take a 7-0 lead. Appalachian State had evened the score when we headed out the door. Murdoc’s not a big U-M fan, but his wife is. Am I glad we didn’t stay home to watch.

If I want to watch my teams lose games they should win, I’ll just watch my beloved Washington Redskins.

The Atlanta Humane Society is now accepting Michael Vick t-shirts and jerseys. They’ll be used as bedding, chew toys and rags for cleaning up dog doo. Which is only appropriate, right, Rocky?

Image from SFGate.

USA Today: At Atlanta shelter, Vick jerseys are going to the dogs.

I don’t begrudge professional athletes or other entertainers their massive salaries. But when they are idiots, I have much less patience with them than I do with regular folks.

Saw this on DIVIDS:

What is that flag under the Stars & Stripes?

Oh:

It’s worse than Communists. It’s the Ohio State Buckeyes.

As a Michigan resident, I gotta say I hope they keel-hauled the joker that ran that up the mast. Even if it was the navigator. Which it was.

Next Monday, of course, is the fifth anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. I’m not quite sure how I’ll mark this milestone, but one event that should provide some distraction will be the Monday Night Football game in Washington between the Redskins and the Minnesota Vikings.

In my mind, one of the signals that America was already on the comeback trail was the fact that the NFL took off only one week after the attacks. At the time, I was a bit skeptical that a quick return to football “normalcy” was the right thing to do, and I still have mixed feelings about it. But the fact that I don’t look back and shake my head over a terrible mistake means that it was probably okay, and the “memorial”-ish scheduling of teams in Washington and New York are a nice touch.

mccune.jpg
LB Robert McCune

My beloved ‘Skins have put together a pretty good team, on paper at least, and I’m hoping for big things from them. One disappointment (and possibly an indication of just how good the ‘Skins are) is the fact that LB Robert McCune once again didn’t make the opening-day roster. I’ve noted McCune before. He served for six years in the Army and the National Guard before attending college and being drafted (heh) by Washington in the fifth round in 2005. He failed to make the final cut last year, but was immediately signed to the team’s practice squad and bounced back and forth between the roster and the practice squad all season.

This season, he once again failed to make the opening-day roster, but he was also once again signed to the practice squad. He was having a pretty solid preseason until a hamstring injury sidelined him for a while, and as the ‘Skins are keeping only six linebackers he might get a chance to see some real action if one of the regulars goes down. McCune is the only linebacker on the practice squad, and he’s capable of playing special teams, so odds are good that he’ll get tapped to fill in if injuries or poor performance create a need.

Landis had positive test after Stage 17

I find this difficult to believe, but only because I cannot fathom someone doing something so blindingly stupid.

If he’s truly guilty he I hope the price he pays is steep. Every American will be shamed by this if it turns out to be right.
