Wearable Power Winner: DuPont/Smart Fuel Cell

Tuesday, October 7th, 2008

$1M Wearable Power Prize Competition Winner Announced:

Designed to spur innovation, the competition was launched in July 2007 by the DoD’s Research and Engineering Directorate to help develop a long-endurance, lightweight power pack for warfighters in the field. After beginning with 169 registered entries, the ultimate testing concluded on Oct. 4 when the final six teams met at Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center Twentynine Palms, Calif., to determine the winner.

DuPont/SFC won the competition by building the lightest wearable system that provided an average of 20 watts of power for more than 96 hours and weighed less than 4,000 grams, or 8.8 pounds. AMI of Ann Arbor, Mich., was awarded $500,000 for second place, and Jenny 600S of Middleburg, Va., won the $250,000 third place prize.

All of the finalists used either fuel-cell or battery technologies or a combination of both to meet the rigorous standards set by the DoD.

Gravel Roads: For thee, not for me

Friday, September 5th, 2008

I overheard this recently. Though the words aren’t verbatim, they’re close. Guy #2 was actually starting to get a bit mad at Guy #1.

Guy 1: You’ve got a great location out here. It’s beautiful.

Guy 2: Thanks. We love it.

Guy 1: I noticed that this area passed a law saying that no more roads can be paved. You’ve got a nice long gravel road you live on. You must love it.

Guy 2: Yeah. We really love it.

Guy 1: I’ll bet. It’s great. I love gravel roads.

Guy 2: What? I thought you were kidding. We absolutely HATE it.

Guy 1: No, no, no. It’s wonderful.

Back to School Look

Happened to notice this on the front page of the Nike Store:

Nike Back to School

Do kids really want to look like these girls? If so, why?

Hey, look at me! I’m not just any dumb wasted-looking chick, mister! I’m a dumb wasted-looking chick with cool Nike gear.

Tactical Gun Shop Bleg

Wednesday, July 9th, 2008

Murdoc is working on another article.

Now I’m looking for a couple gun shops that are either exclusively tactical or at least have a large percentage of their sales in the recreational tactical segment of the market.

I’m interested in talking with them about what they do, how they do it, and what results they’ve had with it. I’m more interested in recreational/sport shooting than in LE/military in this case.

If you own such a shop, know someone who works at one, or have a favorite, please email me with some contact info.

Murdoc the Untruther

Monday, July 7th, 2008

Heh:

Murdock [sic] Online is attempting to dismiss 9/11 Truth, yet I have a feeling it will only entice people to look into the events of 9/11. With the recent news about WTC7, I thought people may want to leave comments of information for the clueless that visit this site. Remember, it’s an infowar and we must drop as many infobombs as we can to defeat this NWO scum that threatens our liberty.

The guy apparently didn’t like my post on the Truther Dog.

Heil America?

Photo from Zombietime’s coverage of protests and counter-protests at the Berkeley Marine Corps Officer Recruiting Office:

Heil America

They did this during the playing of The Star Spangled Banner. Those are some classy folks.

It takes a real courageous person to stand in Berkeley and criticize the US government and the military.

I particularly like the guy saluting with his left arm. Must be too busy texting with his right hand to do it right.

Save the planet. Die at your appointed time. It’s for the kids.

Subway Fears Homeschooled Kids

Tuesday, May 27th, 2008

Subway is running a story-writing contest, but it’s not open to homeschooled students. They are probably afraid that those in government schools would be at a disadvantage. And they probably would be.

Here’s the disclaimer:

NO PURCHASE NECESSARY TO ENTER OR WIN. Contest is open only to legal residents of the Untied States who are currently over the age of 18 and have children who attend elementary, private or parochial schools that serve grades PreK-6. No home schools will be accepted.

The, um, “Untied States”? Screenshot here.

Subway should have hired a homeschool student to write their legal copy.

At the 2A Blog Bash

Friday, May 23rd, 2008

It just occurred to me that in the confusion surrounding the technical issues earlier this week, I never posted the links to all the great gun bloggers I met down in Louisville last week.

I think this is close to complete:

No doubt, I left someone out. If so, just kick me. And send me a note so I can apologize and correct my list.

Besides this star-studded crew, I also had the pleasure of meeting and chatting with the following non-blogger stars:
