Packers vs. Redskins

Sunday, October 31st, 2004

A lot of people have noted that since 1936, when the Washington Redskins win their last home game before a presidential election, the incumbent party wins. When they lose their last home game before a presidential election, the incumbent party loses.

The Washington Post had an article about this on Wednesday:

The Redskins (2-4), who snapped their skid with a victory two weeks ago, will face the Green Bay Packers (3-4) at FedEx Field on Halloween. According to the streak, a Packers loss ensures that George Bush stays in office for a second term, but a Redskins loss means that John Kerry, the Democratic nominee, becomes the next president.

“That’s kind of amazing,” Coach Joe Gibbs said. “You wouldn’t think that something like that would line up that many times.”

Well, you wouldn’t.

Quarterback Mark Brunell [well, a quarterback in the sense that he's listed as one on the roster--Murdoc], a Republican, was not impressed by the streak: “Pure coincidence. I don’t think there’s anything to it.”

But last week, Kerry’s running mate, Sen. John Edwards, told a television station in La Crosse, Wis., that he would root against the Redskins because of the streak. Edwards, who lives in Georgetown, told WKBT-TV, “We are for the Packers, period.”

When Gibbs was informed of Edwards’s remark, he made a swift reply, then asked that it be struck from the record. Then Gibbs offered a, well, politically correct response. “Hopefully, we’re going to have a lot of people pulling for us this weekend,” the coach said, chuckling.

Joe Bugel, Washington’s assistant head coach-offense, was more blunt when told about Edwards’s position. “John Edwards just lost my vote” he said, then added slyly, “He never had it in the first place.”

I haven’t actually checked the facts out, so I’m just taking it on faith that this streak actually exists.

And if it does, I’m looking at it in a slightly different way.

Given the Redskins injury problems, the DWI arrest of top rookie Sean Taylor, and the fact that the aforementioned Mark Brunell sucks, I’d fully expect the Redskins to be hard-pressed against a tough Packers team this afternoon.

But, since Bush is going to win the election, it means the ‘Skins will beat the Pack.

We’ll see.

UPDATE: The streak ends! Green Bay beats Washington in Washington 28-14.

MO predicts a 305-233 incumbent party win on Tuesday.

(One caveat: The Redskins would have takena 21-20 lead with a couple of minutes left if not for a questionable illegal motion call that nullified a great TD by Clinton Portis. I’d hate to see officials make questionable calls in the aftermath of an apparent Bush victory. But could this be an omen?

I think not.

We’ll see.)

Meanwhile, Paul at Wizbang writes about how a Kerry victory could be good for the Republicans in the long run, and I don’t really disagree with his reasoning. In fact, it mirrors very closely a lot of points that I made in a telephone conversation with a raving Right-winger this past summer, including Paul’s assertation that John Kerry would “out-Carter Carter” and lead to huge gains for the GOP in 2006 and 2008. I believe that this is the EXACT wording that I used in my telephone conversation, and as soon as I finish typing this post I am going to check my telephone for listening devices.

While I DO agree with what he says, I absolutely feel that we don’t have time for all that right now.

I don’t want sell the future short and all. But I want to get there. I truly feel that John Kerry would be a disasterous president for the United States during this time of war, mostly because he doesn’t seem to intend to wage the war.

F9/11 Special pushed onto some TiVos?

TiVo Halloween Weirdness

Kevin at Wizbang had a WEIRD thing happen on Friday night. His TiVo apparently automatically recorded a 30-minute special on Michael Moore’s F9/11 called Fahrenheit 9/11: A Movement in Time. He didn’t set it to record. It just appeared there. He claims it appeared as a manually-programmed recording.

Did anyone else have this experience? We didn’t. I have a Hughes HDVR2 DirecTV TiVo machine. The show didn’t show up either on my normal “Now Playing” list or on the main menu where TiVo pushes short spots that I never watch no matter what they are.

If anyone DID have this happen to them, let’s try to figure out why some did and some didn’t. I live in Michigan, so the first thing that occurred to me (battleground state residence) would have indicated that I should have received it.

My machine is set to NOT automatically record TiVo Suggestions.

Anyone else?

8 U.S. Marines killed west of Baghdad

“West of Baghdad” means Fallujah and Ramadi. As noted previously, the Marines are not “paused” at all. They are preparing for a major push into the heart of the Sunni insurgency.

ramadipause8.jpg

Fierce clashes erupted Saturday in Fallujah as an American military convoy entered the southeastern industrial Shuhada neighborhood and nearby Nueimiya village — an apparent probing foray on the city’s edges. Explosions and gunfire rocked the area and smoke was seen billowing in the air, witnesses said.

Marines responded with heavy artillery fire after insurgents shot mortar shells from positions in the southeast of the city. About 4 p.m. a Marine Harrier jet bombed a mortar position inside Fallujah and strafed it with machine-gun fire, “neutralizing the target and any threat,” said Marine spokesman 1st Lt. Lyle Gilbert.

The Marines generally don’t give out details about their casualties like the Army usually does.

This isn’t the first time that we’ve ramped up for major ops in the area. Our earlier effort was cautious and sniper-based for the most part.

This is going to be different.

Our military has been spoiling or a chance to put these clowns out of business. It’s not going to be easy. It’s not going to be pretty. But it will be decisive.

This isn’t the first time that we’ve enlisted the aid of Iraqi military forces in the area. Our earlier effort was marred by a lack of will and training. Some Iraqis even crossed sides and aided the insurgents.

This is going to be different.

The Iraqi military has been spoiling for a chance to put these clowns out of business. It’s not going to be easy. It’s not going to be pretty. But it will be decisive.

The political situation is far different today than it was in April. The Iraqi government now has sovereignty. They are preparing for elections. The death toll over the past six months from insurgents and terrorists has primarily consisted of Iraqi civilians and security forces. Most of the residents of Fallujah have fled the city. Many insurgents probably left with them, but many of the hard-core Sunni fighters seem to be still holed up inside.

We tried playing the “kinder and gentler” game with the fighters in Fallujah. We tried using Iraqis that would see eye-to-eye with the city as a compromise security force. It was a total failure.

Allawi would like to see Fallujans voting as a sign of Iraq’s new direction. The military would like to see an end to Fallujans defying the law and order that has begun to turn Iraq into a new nation. The Iraqi military forces would like to see a major victory as a chance to establish themselves in the hearts and minds of the Iraqi people.

I think it’s going to happen. Soon.

NASA mulls early retirement for space shuttle

I haven’t even read the whole thing. I’m supposed to be WORKING.

Earlier this month I lowered my prediction to:

Murdoc’s odds that the shuttle EVER flies again (manned, at least) have dropped to 3-2 against.

Previously they had been 50-50. Since COLUMBIA’s final flight I’ve been saying it probably won’t ever fly again.

Murdoc’s new Space Shuttle Ever Flies Again odds: ZERO.

I may review these odds after a bit more reading and reflection.

And ObL is going to air on Al Jazeera? I really really thought that bastard was dead.

Okay. Back to work.

Begun, this Clone War has

You know, my kids could probably play this game all day long. “Find and circle the pairs that match.”

(Click for better view of cheating)

Sneaky is sneaky, no matter which side you’re on. And it seems to me that Yoda and Jedi Council will come to rue the day they enlisted the help of the Clone Army…

Photos from the politically-motivated pause in operations

Friday, October 29th, 2004

I’m sure these members of the 2-5 Marines were glad to read about the fact that offensive operations would be pretty much on hold until after the elections.

All pics were taken within the last few days in Ramadi. From Frontline Photos of 10/27/04 and 10/28/04. (Click each for a (slightly) larger version.)

Oohrah.

UPDATE: Meanwhile, up the road: U.S. prepares for big assault on Fallujah. The money quote:

If we do so, it will be decisive and we will whack them.

Of course, since this will probably take place later next week at the earliest, the media will cry “See? They waited until AFTER the election!” But the fact that it will be “after the election” that Bush just won will make it all okay.

Iraqi forces will participate in the operation if it goes forward.

Bonus: Another 2-5 Marines photo from the MSNBC story:

UPDATE: 380gate is crumbling

Thursday, October 28th, 2004

You start picking at a thread. Next thing you know, you’re standing there in your underwear.

As I’ve said, militarily-wise, these explosives aren’t all that significant.

Even if they were, it’s pretty hard to blame Bush personally or the plan in general if they were looted.

The troubling issues for me are (in no particular order)

  • That CBS wanted to run this as a Sunday night “October Surprise” on 60 MINUTES to specifically alter the outcome of the election. They have lost any little shred of credibility that they might have had left after Memogate.
  • The UN was obviously trying to directly affect an American election by leaking the story. They can’t do a damn thing about Iraqi leadership or North Korean leadership or Sudanese leadership, but dear God get that Texan out of the White House.
  • The Russians might be covering their own tracks by helping Saddam get rid of WMD evidence. This has been a long-suspected theory, but if Bush’s October Surprise is absolute proof of Russian wrong-doing AND IT HOLDS UP, the length of this war was just extended by ten years. I don’t think I’m exaggerating.

Oh, and those 380 tons? It was maybe only 3 tons.

If this turns out to be true it is the end of UN weapons inspections world-wide until major major major changes are made.

Paul at Wizbang has a semi-crackpot theory about UN duplicity in this matter. I remain skeptical. But I’m watching.

I’m patiently waiting for more info on the Russian moving trucks and the UN lies before passing judgment. But my gut tells me that at least one of the two charges has to be true.

Honestly, I hope I’m wrong.

French Terror Alert

Nonplussed, who’s currently a completely deranged Left Coaster but still worth keeping an eye on:

AP and UPI reported that the French government announced yesterday that it has raised its terror alert level from “run” to “hide.” The only two higher levels in France are “surrender” and “collaborate.” The action was precipitated by the recent fire which destroyed one of France’s white flag factories, disabling their military.

Whew! For a second I though this was about the Sudan

African Town killed

Thankfully, it’s just about a proposed section of Detroit not getting approval.

I should have known since the UN is still around making sure everything is okay in the Sudan and the rest of the world.

I wouldn’t exactly call this “breaking news”

Seems to me that the Arafat Condition has been serious since about 1970 or so. But it might be improving soon.
